Eugene GOOSSENS - Five Impressions of a Holiday
Ned ROREM - Flute Trio
Felix MENDELSSOHN - Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor Op. 49
The first concert in our 2017 Concert Series is part of the 4MBS Festival of Classics, which celebrates British connections. We have drawn together a dynamic programme, opening with Eugene Goossens' Five Impressions of a Holiday which depicts idyllic holiday scenes. One of the most prolific writers of English song, American composer Ned Rorem's confrontational Flute Trio pushes the boundaries of both virtuosity and bleak control of the instruments. As a frequent visitor to England, Felix Mendelssohn gained a strong following and made a deep impression on British musical life. His Piano Trio No. 1 encapsulates the early Romantic style, ranging from stormy, tempestuous moments to glorious lyrical melodies. Originally written for violin, cello and piano, Mendelssohn gave consent for the piece to be arranged for flute instead of violin. This programme gives an overview of the repertoire for this instrumentation and the many possibilities of the combination.
